Castles and Manor Houses

The history of Djursland is closely connected to the many castles and manors found here.

Gammel Estrup – the Manor Museum

is in a beautiful location in the north of Djursland at Auning, and the manor is one of the most well-preserved renaissance manors in Denmark. The history of Gammel Estrup dates back to the 1300s, and for 600 years, the place was owned by the Scheel family. They were one of the richest and most influential families in Denmark in the 1600s and 1700s, and it is said that the reigning Scheel could ride all the way from Grenaa to Viborg on his own land. Today, the old manor has been turned into a museum and is a unique example of the Danish manors and the life led by masters as well as servants for centuries. The museum exhibits interiors with many beautiful pieces of furniture, Gobelin tapestries, paintings and other objects, and great emphasis has been put on decorating the various rooms, corridors and halls as authentically as possible.

During all school holidays, there are activities for children and a living museum with people in costumes as well as a working kitchen, where you can taste home-made cake and a cup of coffee brewed on the large wood-burning stove. The museum also organises classical concerts, 1700s days, special exhibitions and Christmas preparations. Get 2 museums at the price of 1 and visit the museums of Gl. Estrup.

Rosenholm Slot
In April 1559, Jørgen Rosenkrantz acquired the farm Holm outside Hornslet from the King. In the following years, he built a castle on that spot and named it Rosenholm after his family. The family Rosenkrantz has owned the castle ever since, and today Rosenholm is the Danish house which has been in the possession of the same family for the longest time. The rose garden surrounding the fountain is an enchanting place.

The castle is fully furnished with hundreds of items of furniture, paintings and tapestries, which provide the visitor with a fascinating view of a noble family’s life through centuries. The castle is one of the biggest and most
beautiful Danish manors from the Renaissance.
