The Danish Counsil for safe Swimming has listed the following points which should be observed:
- Never go swimming alone
- Do not swim within one hour after taking a meal
- Do not go swimming after strains, such as running, wait until you are relaxed.
- When swimming, follow the coast line
- Never go swimming in mires and marlpits
- Never stay for too long in the water - do not get cold
- Never shout for help in jest
- When swimming, stay close to lifesaver post or station
- Keep an eye on children, your own as well as others'
- Never go out deeper than where the water reaches your waistline
- Never go out where you cannot reach bottom
- Leave air mattresses on the shore
- Never swim after inflatable balls or animals, etc.
- Never dig holes into the dunes or slopes, and never crawl into holes, whether natural or manmade. Every year, accidents happen as a result of caving in
In certain weather conditions, stinging jellyfish wash up on the Danish coast. If you touch one, you will experience a stinging pain, because the jellyfish leaves small cysts of venom that burst after a while so that the venom comes into direct contact with the skin. Follow this advice:
- Never dry the site of the sting with a towel - you will simply break more of the cysts
- Instead, using long, light strokes, remove the cysts with an old-fashioned razor or something with a smooth, straight edge, e.g. a comb
- Then cover the affected area with a pain-relieving cream
